Commercial Glass-Door Merchandiser: Fan Not Running — Causes & Fixes
Compiled by Resultex Media Group · Editorially reviewed · Last verified August 2026
Check in this order (5-minute diagnostic)
Work top to bottom — the quickest, most-likely checks are first.
- Unit is in a normal defrost cycle (freezer). On a freezer, the evaporator fan is supposed to stop during defrost. True: during defrost 'for freezers only, evaporator fan(s) will also turn off,' and the display shows 'dEF.'
- Compressor is off, so the condenser fan is off. The condenser fan is wired to run with the compressor. Beverage-Air: 'The Condenser Fan is wired directly to the Compressor, not through the controller,' and turns off 'when the Compressor is not running.' If the cabinet is at setpoint, both are simply cycled off.
- Evaporator fan blade blocked by ice or product. With power OFF, look for frost/ice contacting the evaporator fan blade or product packed against the interior rear panel blocking airflow.
- Condenser fan obstructed or dirty. With power OFF, check the condenser fan behind the front/rear grill for debris on the blade. Some True units run a self-cleaning cycle where 'the condenser fan(s) will reverse for 30 seconds to blow dirt off the condensing coil.'
- Failed fan motor or bent/broken blade. A fan that hums but will not spin, spins slowly, or is noisy/seized. Beverage-Air lists 'Evaporator fan not turning' and, on multi-fan units, 'one fan may be turning slowly and will need to be replaced'; also 'Bent or broken fan blade... Noisy fan motor.'
Likely causes, checks & fixes
| Likely cause | How to check | What to do | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit is in a normal defrost cycle (freezer) | On a freezer, the evaporator fan is supposed to stop during defrost. True: during defrost 'for freezers only, evaporator fan(s) will also turn off,' and the display shows 'dEF.' | Wait out the defrost cycle; the fan should restart (there may be a short delay). No repair needed if it resumes. · see: freezer merchandiser frosting | DIY-safe |
| Compressor is off, so the condenser fan is off | The condenser fan is wired to run with the compressor. Beverage-Air: 'The Condenser Fan is wired directly to the Compressor, not through the controller,' and turns off 'when the Compressor is not running.' If the cabinet is at setpoint, both are simply cycled off. | Confirm the cabinet is holding temperature (fan off at setpoint is normal). If the compressor never runs even when warm, see the not-cooling symptom. | DIY-safe |
| Evaporator fan blade blocked by ice or product | With power OFF, look for frost/ice contacting the evaporator fan blade or product packed against the interior rear panel blocking airflow. | Manually defrost the unit if ice is contacting the blade, and keep product from blocking the rear panel/vents (leave gaps for air circulation, per Hoshizaki). Address the underlying frost cause (door seal/defrost). · see: freezer merchandiser frosting | Basic |
| Condenser fan obstructed or dirty | With power OFF, check the condenser fan behind the front/rear grill for debris on the blade. Some True units run a self-cleaning cycle where 'the condenser fan(s) will reverse for 30 seconds to blow dirt off the condensing coil.' | Disconnect power and clear debris from the fan blade and coil (see maintenance). | Basic |
| Failed fan motor or bent/broken blade | A fan that hums but will not spin, spins slowly, or is noisy/seized. Beverage-Air lists 'Evaporator fan not turning' and, on multi-fan units, 'one fan may be turning slowly and will need to be replaced'; also 'Bent or broken fan blade... Noisy fan motor.' | Have a qualified technician replace the fan motor or blade (Beverage-Air remedies: 'Replace fan blade... Replace fan motor'). | Technician |

Clean the condenser coil DIY-safe
- Disconnect power to the unit (unplug it or switch off and lock out the breaker). Beverage-Air: 'Rotating fan blade can cause personal injury. Unplug unit from power supply before beginning to clean condenser.'
- Access the condenser: remove the lower/front louver grill (True slide-door: two lower screws, then swing the grill up off the top pivot pins; True swing-door: four screws; Beverage-Air: two Phillips screws at the top corners of the front panel, then lift the panel off).
- Brush accumulated dust and lint off the finned condenser coil and the fan blades with a stiff-bristle brush; brush up and down along the fins so you do not bend them.
- Vacuum the loosened debris from the coil and floor; for heavy buildup blow the coil clear with compressed air/CO2/nitrogen (wear eye protection). Do not use a filter over the coil.
- Confirm you can see through the coil, then reinstall the louver grill/front panel and screws.
- Restore power and confirm the compressor and fan run.

Clean or replace a door gasket DIY-safe
- Clean first: scrub the gasket with a warm (100-110F) mild detergent solution and a soft brush, rinse, and dry (Beverage-Air).
- Inspect for tears, splits, hardening, or dirt that prevents a full seal; a gasket that no longer seals should be replaced (gaskets are a normal wear item).
- To replace a push-in/magnetic gasket, pull the old gasket out of its retainer channel around the door and clean the channel and door edge.
- Press the new gasket into the retainer, seating the corners first and then working along each side until it is fully seated all around (True: replace the magnetic gasket in the retainer).
- Close the door and check for an even seal; a paper/dollar-bill drag test at several points confirms the seal. Open the door only by the handle to avoid re-damaging the gasket (Hoshizaki).

Adjust the self-closing door tension / correct self-close Basic
- First level the cabinet: use the leveling legs/casters so the door hangs square and self-closes (Beverage-Air/Hoshizaki both tie door operation to leveling).
- For sliding bottle-slider doors (Beverage-Air ClearCool 3000/3100): hold the door open just enough to expose the spring, grommet, and screw in the header.
- Note the three square cutouts in the header: inner = minimum tension, mid = mid-range, outside = maximum tension.
- Relocate the spring retaining grommet and self-drilling screw to the cutout that gives enough tension for the door to self-close without slamming.
- For swing doors: confirm the hinge cartridge/cam is intact and the hinges are tight to the cabinet; replace a worn self-close hinge cartridge if the door will not return.
- Test that the door closes fully and the gasket seats all around.

Manually defrost an iced-up cabinet DIY-safe
- Move all product to another working cooler or freezer so it stays at a safe temperature.
- Disconnect power (or switch off) and prop the doors open.
- Let all frost/ice melt naturally. Do NOT clean a frozen evaporator with a sharp object (Beverage-Air) or chip ice off the coil, which can puncture it and release refrigerant.
- Mop up melt water and confirm the condensate drain is clear so water drains out.
- Restore power, let the cabinet return to setpoint, then reload product.
- If heavy frost returns quickly, address the door seal or defrost system (see the frosting symptom).

Turn the interior/sign lights on and check the light switch DIY-safe
- Confirm the cabinet has power (display on, fans running).
- On True glass-door models, set the interior rocker switch to ON (located on the inside top right of the ceiling) or press the LAE controller's 'Manual Activation' button.
- On Hoshizaki/electronic-controller models, press the light-bulb / ES button on the controller to toggle the lights back on (Energy Saving mode may have turned them off for one hour or until the door is opened).
- If the switch is on and power is present but the lights stay dark, reseat the LED lamp and connector with power OFF, then replace a failed LED lamp with the correct part.
- If all lamps stay dark after that, the LED driver/power supply needs a technician.

Restore airflow: clearance, location, and grille DIY-safe
- Keep the required rear clearance for air circulation (Hoshizaki 8"; Turbo Air TGM-14RV 4"; Beverage-Air MMR 3").
- Keep the front grille/louver clear of boxes, packaging, and walls (Beverage-Air: 'Grille area at front must be free and clear').
- Keep the unit within its rated ambient (Hoshizaki 60F-86F; Beverage-Air 60F-100F), out of direct sun (shade the glass if needed), and away from ovens/heat sources.
- Confirm the condenser coil is clean enough to see through (see the condenser how-to).

Frequently asked questions
Why is my glass-door merchandiser fan not running?
First tell which fan: the evaporator fan (inside, behind the rear panel) normally runs continuously except during a freezer defrost, and the condenser fan (near the compressor) runs with the compressor. Ice against the evaporator blade or debris in the condenser fan are common, easy-to-check causes; a failed fan motor or blade is a technician replacement.
When should I call a technician instead of fixing it myself?
Call a licensed technician for anything involving the sealed system, refrigerant, gas, or high-voltage wiring — for example: Failed fan motor or bent/broken blade. These are diagnostic-only for an operator.
Is it worth repairing or replacing?
Simple fixes (gaskets, coil cleaning, a single part) are worth repairing. Consider replacing when it needs a compressor or sealed-system repair and is 8–10+ years old, or when repeat service calls near the price of a new unit.
