General safety
- Disconnect power before servicing or cleaning (unplug the unit, or switch off and lock out the breaker). Beverage-Air: 'Rotating fan blade can cause personal injury. Unplug unit from power supply before beginning to clean condenser.' True: 'Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning and making repairs.' Note that on True units, setting the temperature control to 0 does NOT remove power to the light circuit, perimeter (anti-condensate) heaters, or evaporator fans.
- Refrigerant work is regulated by EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. It is illegal to intentionally vent refrigerant, and servicing, repairing, or disposing of refrigeration equipment that contains refrigerant must be done by a Section 608-certified technician. True: intentionally releasing refrigerant can subject you to 'fines and imprisonment.'
- Many merchandisers use flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant (R-290 propane or R-600a isobutane). Beverage-Air: use 'a technician certified to repair R290 equipment' and 'ONLY Beverage-Air factory service parts,' and there are 'no access valves on the refrigeration system.' During R-290 service a combustible-gas leak detector and a spark/flame-free area are required. Keep gasoline, kerosene, and other flammable materials away from the cabinet.
- Leave sealed-system and line-voltage repairs to a qualified technician: compressor, refrigerant charge, defrost heaters, drain-tube heater, anti-condensate/perimeter heater wiring, LED driver/power supply, and control boards.
- Use the unit's dedicated grounded outlet; do not remove or bypass the ground prong and do not use an extension cord (True: 'NEVER USE AN EXTENSION CORD!'; Beverage-Air: 'Do not use extension cords and do not disable or by-pass ground prong'). Do not plug or unplug with wet hands (Turbo Air). Do not connect to a GFI/GFCI outlet unless code requires it, and then use a compliant hospital-grade GFCI (Beverage-Air).
- Do not clean a frozen evaporator or a dirty condenser with a sharp object (Beverage-Air), and do not chip ice off the coil; defrost by melting instead.
- Follow food-safety rules on product: keep cold TCS food at or below 41F, and discard TCS food that has been in the 41F-135F danger zone beyond FDA Food Code limits (FDA Food Code 3-501.16).
