ENERGY STAR (Commercial Kitchen)

ENERGY STAR: ENERGY STAR is a U.S. EPA/DOE certification identifying equipment in the most energy-efficient tier for its class. Certified commercial refrigerators, fryers, ovens, ice machines, and dishwashers meet published efficiency criteria and are listed in EPA's product database.

Why it matters when buying

ENERGY STAR models cut energy and water use over the equipment's life and often qualify for utility rebates, lowering total cost of ownership. For refrigeration and ice machines especially, the efficiency gap versus a standard unit adds up quickly in a 24/7 kitchen.

How to read it on a spec sheet

Look for the ENERGY STAR mark and check the model against the official EPA product finder. Efficiency is stated as energy/water use per standardized test — compare within the same equipment class, not across categories.
